With memories of your last destination fading into the rear-view mirror and the view of the sun rising ahead, the last thing on your mind is the completely unexpected – your pride and joy breaks down!

Now what?!

It’s a frustrating experience at the best of times and can be overwhelming. Quite often, motorists panic and unwittingly place themselves and others in danger while trying to rectify the situation.

Here are a couple of tips to minimise the road safety risks associated with a breakdown:

  • Stop and park your RV in a safe place as far off the road as practical.
  • Avoid stopping around blind corners, just over crests, on bridges or where roads are very narrow.
  • Use your hazard lights to warn other road users. In poor light, activate the parking lights too.
  • If it is safe to do so, leave your RV and move behind a safety barrier if available. It is safer for the driver and any passengers to keep away from the road and well clear of the vehicle while waiting for help to arrive. If it is not safe to leave your RV, stay in the vehicle and buckle up the seatbelt.
  • Exit the RV on the passenger’s side (wherever possible) as it is safer for the driver and passengers.

OK, we’re safe, what next?

Did you know that KT Insurance’s Recreational Vehicle Insurance policies include cover for towing costs to the nearest repairer as a direct result of a mechanical and/or electrical breakdown? No excess applies to cover for up to $600 per mechanical and/or electrical breakdown incident with a maximum of $1000 per policy period.

If you have broken down due to a mechanical or electrical fault and you need a tow to the nearest repairer, you can either arrange for the tow yourself or call the KT Insurance Assist 24/7 service on 1300 984 984. They will ask about your location as well as the length, height and weight of your vehicle to arrange the appropriate towing service. You will need to pay for the tow and then submit a copy of the account to us and we will reimburse you in accordance with the limit under the policy ($600 per incident with a maximum of $1000 per policy period).

What's the difference between Emergency Roadside Assistance and Comprehensive RV Insurance?

Emergency Roadside Assistance provides breakdown support for mechanical issues and problems like flat batteries, punctured tyres, emergency fuel (if you run out) and lockouts. Emergency Roadside Assistance can also offer you towing assistance. This is in addition and entirely separate to KT’s cover for towing as a result of mechanical and/or electrical breakdown.

So, if you have a policy with KT insurance and if you have a separate roadside assistance service, and if your RV breaks down due to a mechanical or electrical fault, where the cost of your tow to the nearest repairer exceeds $600, you may be eligible to claim for the additional costs from your roadside assistance service provider. Please always check the services and benefits on offer from your provider, as they do vary from one to the other.
